If Russia had kept communism and followed the Chinese economic model would they be more prosperous?

20 years ago, If Russia and Eastern Europe had decided to keep their communist system, one party state and followed the chinese economic reforms by having special economic zones etc then would they be enjoying the smae levels of economic prosperity and development that China is having?
