Who can i get to fix a petrol gauge in a car?

My gf's car has a petrol gauge that wont tell how much petrol is really in the car. It goes up and down at its own will! She usually just guesses how much petrol is in it and when she needs to fill up. Is it a problem to take to an auto electrician or to a mechanic?
